sunday salon

haven't devoted much to my chosen book today because i'm trying to beat this cold that came upon me. i rarely get sick, so this is really strange to have a second cold in one month! putting that aside, i picked up some books i had on reserve at the library today and have started on the heart of yoga developing a personal practice by t.k.v. desikachar. his father was the great yoga teacher sri krishnamacharya and i am just now reading the introductory pages dedicated to an interview with the author in which he talks about his father's yoga teachings and how he used yoga to heal. having stumbled over the (indian) word names, this is starting off as an interesting read for a nonfiction....

sunday salon

Tssbadge1 i can't believe it's sunday already and the long weekend is nearly over! needless to say i'm still on the sweet revenge and was only able to devote a couple hours to reading. the victim's fiancee has been arrested as a suspect, and goldy the caterer is tossing thoughts in her mind; as she does this, she prepares to cook! i love it cause everything she puts together sounds so yummy. while talking to the suspect (before she was arrested)in her kitchen, goldy prepares her gingerbread that would serve as prizes for a cookie exchange she's catering (the cookies the ladies of the aspen meadow garden club are exchanging are all being made by goldy and her right-hand man, julian!). my mouth waters as she lists the ingredients: unsalted butter, dark molasses, sour cream, dried ginger, grated gingerroot and freshly ground black pepper - all to make a "soft, cakelike variety of gingerbread, the kind you topped with lemon sauce or vanilla ice cream or, if you were feeling teddibly teddibly chichi, creame fraiche." fortunatley, the recipe for this 'door-prize gingerbread' is included in the recipe section of the book - and i'm suddenly hungry for gingerbread!

on the knitting front, i'm at the toe of the first hedgerow sock and feeling a bit more comfortable with the continental style knitting.  maybe i'll give the knitting socks on two circulars a try for the next sock. this pair will be for me as it's been slow going and i've become rather attached to it....

tomorrow's a holiday and i plan to continue the reading and knitting and catching up on some of my korean dramas that i've dvr'd during the week.  hope you all have a peaceful martin luther king day....

sunday salon

Tssbadge1 today is my first sunday participating in the sunday salon. in the morning, i spent an hour reading before church from our lesson book and scriptures to prepare myself for the lesson - it was great to read for an hour with no interruption.

then when i got home, after lunch, i sat down with diane mott davidson's sweet revenge. for my first book of the year i chose a book that would entertain me, and i love light culinary mysteries. this is the author's latest mystery in her series featuring goldy schultz, a caterer in colorado who seems to always find herself in the middle of a mystery-usually murder. i thought i picked a most appropriate book for my first sunday salon book, cause it involves goldy catering a holiday breakfast for the staff of the local library and it is in the library where the librarian happens upon a dead body! as with all her books, the author includes recipes at the end of her book - i must say the 'unorthodox shepherd's pie' and 'bleak house bars' sound too good! i was able to finish 3 chapters - so i'm a slow reader! plus, i fell asleep - it was sooo cold - yes in hawaii! it must have been 60 degrees in my house! i had on my handknit socks and thick sweater cooking dinner in the kitchen! sorry for the digression - i ended at the part where goldy is about to be questioned by the police (btw, her husband is an investigator) because she was making preparations for the next day's feast and ran to the aid of the librarian when the body was found....hopefully i'll have more to report next sunday....

Img_2903_2 i leave you with a shot of our sunday morning hawaiian sky - a predictor of the cold we experienced today?

Also, i'm wondering if this will help me work on my new year's resolution to read 2 books a month? last year i joined the yahoo tbr (to-be-read) group and was averaging a book a month until the holidays rolled in.  The sunday salon requires you to write/share about what you read, a little more committment than just listing books.....
